ILLEGAL – Inspiring Work in Schools

It was a great pleasure to visit Nightingale Primary School in Plumstead last week and see some of the fantastic work inspired by our graphic novel, ILLEGAL.  The whole school did a school wide project on Refugees with ILLEGAL being the focus for Year 6.

Year 6, under the talented tuition of Mr Gardner, had done some amazing projects, posters, and essays using the story of Ebo’s journey as their jumping off point.  The children had even created a 3D map of Ebo’s travels.  As a writer it is always lovely to get feedback from readers, and it is even better to see a book you’ve created inspiring such great work in the classroom.

Year 6 listened brilliantly while I talked to them about the process by which myself, Eoin Colfer, and artist Giovanni Rigano worked together to create ILLEGAL.  At the end of the talk, Year 6 were full of great questions for our Q&A session.

Some of the work from Year 6 is shown below.

My thanks to Mr Gardner and his Year 6 class for a lovely morning.

If you’re a teacher planning to use ILLEGAL in your class room then Hodder have created a set of terrific Teacher’s Notes to go with the book.  Get in touch via the website or twitter (@andrewdonkin) if you’d like a (free) set.

Thanks to Mr Gardner, Mr Cole, Mr Wicks, and all of Year 6.
