Absolutely delighted to report that our graphic novel GLOBAL has won Highly Commended at the highly prestigious Wainwright Prize. GLOBAL is co-written with my dear friend, Eoin Colfer, and drawn by our talented Como-based chum, Giovanni Rigano.
GLOBAL is the first graphic novel to be longlisted, shortlisted, or win Highly Commended at the Wainwright Prize.
The Wainwright Prize announces annual shortlists and then winners and second place, Highly Commended, across three categories: the Prize for Nature Writing, the Prize for Writing on Conservation, and the Prize for Children’s Writing on Nature and Conservation.
The Prize showcases writing that reflects its namesake Alfred Wainwright’s values of celebrating nature and our environment, nurturing respect for our planet, and informing readers of the threats that the earth currently faces.
The awards evening was held last month at Camley Street Nature Park, in the dramatically redeveloped area near Kings Cross. The evening consisted of a series of panel interviews / discussions for each of the categories. (Two panels for the children’s award – double trouble!) It was a really interesting evening with all the authors talking about their books – all of which seemed to be labours of love.
I was there with publicity supremo, Emily, from Hodder and took part in the second panel for the children’s award. I was very surprised and delighted when GLOBAL was announced as the winner of the Highly Commended award for Children’s Writing on Nature and Conservation. I quickly shared the news with #TeamGlobal in Dublin and Lake Como.
