Many congratulations to Ryan who is the winner of the 2014 Graham S Brand Award.
The award is presented every October to the student on the University of Westminster’s Media Course who has written and directed the best radio feature of the year. It’s given in memory of Graham S. Brand, my late writing partner and a much-loved former student of the University. Mrs Brand, Graham’s mother, and I visited the University in October to present the award and give a talk to the Media students who were very attentive and full of questions.
Ryan’s winning piece was a ten minute radio feature entitled “Urban Chickens.” The judges admired not only its varied clucking, but also the way it seamlessly combined speech and music, while always following a clear narrative path.
Ryan is now in his third and final year on the Media Course and as well as tackling his dissertation, he is also a presenter on the University’s pop-up digital radio station, Radio Zest. Radio Zest (love the name) describes itself as “Refreshingly Real Radio” and broadcasts over the internet between 12-3pm on Tuesdays during autumn. Yes, I know, that’s quite a specific time slot.
Congratulations again to Ryan, and thanks as ever to radio course leader, Dr Matthew Linfoot, who organised the visit with great care and attention.
